The purchase of a monument or mausoleum is not as complicated as you might think. There are a number of factors to consider in the selection process. What makes the selection difficult, however, is the knowledge that the memorial you choose is both an immediate expression of love and a historic record that will endure for centuries. This is a responsibility that can be difficult, tedious and emotional.

What are the regulations I need to observe at my cemetery?

Every cemetery has its own rules dictated by lot section and area. Even if you have already purchased and currently own a burial lot, there could be some restrictions that limit your monument choices. For example, a cemetery could permit upright monuments in one section — and require lawn-level markers in another — based on the topography, structure and maintenance conditions at the cemetery.

Fred Donatelli & Son Cemetery Memorials has worked with virtually ALL OF THE CEMETERIES in the tri-state region, and in most cases we are fully knowledgeable about their regulations. If there is any uncertainty concerning what your cemetery may or may not permit, we will contact the cemetery for you to ensure that your choice complies with their regulations. Furthermore, if you do not already own a lot, you may want to consider the various types of monuments prior to your cemetery lot purchase.

What type of memorial is right for my loved one?

Once you determine what your cemetery allows, you can then consider the type of monument or mausoleum that interests you. In making your selection, you should consider the location of the lot, the slope of the land, surrounding memorials and the immediate environment, including trees, shrubs and landscaping.

UPRIGHT:

This type of monument is impressive and stands out at a distance. Uprights can be vertical or horizontal. They are available in a variety of shapes and can be purchased with a base or stand alone as a monolith.

SLANT:

This type of monument is easy to identify among other memorials, slant monuments look nice on a slight grade. Visibility can be increased by mounting the memorial on a base. Depending on the size you select, the slant provides a larger surface, allowing for considerable design options.

BEVEL:

These unique monuments are just slightly elevated above ground level. The double sized version allows considerable space for distinctive design elements.

FLAT:

These monuments are more commonly referred to as “markers” because they lay flat against the ground. This is the type of monument most required in some sections of certain cemeteries. Size restrictions vary, but there are usually options that can increase decorative flexibility.

My family owns several lots and monuments. Can a duplicate monument be purchased?

Yes. Duplicate monuments are frequently requested and have always been a large part of our business at Fred Donatelli & Son Cemetery Memorials. We will visit your cemetery and your lot to complete our estimate. We will do our best to exactly match the type, granite color, design and inscription of any existing memorial.

I am interested in a mausoleum. What are my options?

A mausoleum is one of the most elaborate and unique expressions of memorialization, requiring a considerable investment of time and money. Mausoleums are each unique, based on family history, budget and design preference. We will share a variety of mausoleum designs based on your interest — working closely with you and other members of your family to listen to your needs.
